Broward County Healthcare Coalition Stop the Bleed Initiative

The “Stop the Bleed” initiative, launched nationally, focuses on teaching bleeding control techniques to improve survival rates during traumatic events like active shooter incidents.

In Broward County, the Healthcare Coalition, comprising over 60 healthcare providers and emergency responders, has been instrumental in training and equipping local institutions to respond to emergencies.

Key Elements of the Initiative

Training

The Coalition organized "Stop the Bleed" training for healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and community members (e.g., teachers, police, fire personnel), teaching them to apply tourniquets and control bleeding until help arrives. The Coalition also hosted a number of Stop the Bleed Train the Trainer courses to allow members to train staff in their facilities.

Equipment Distribution

Life-saving bleeding control kits were distributed to member organizations, including hospitals and EMS units, equipped with necessary supplies like tourniquets and gauze.

Simulated Drills

Drills incorporating "Stop the Bleed" principles prepared healthcare providers for large-scale emergencies, solidifying skills in real-world situations.

Impact on Active Shooter Response

Improved Response

Trained personnel in hospitals, EMS units, and public venues were able to intervene quickly, saving lives by controlling bleeding before EMS arrived.

Enhanced Preparedness

By training community members, the Coalition expanded the number of individuals capable of providing immediate help during active shooter events, boosting overall emergency preparedness.

Increased Survival Rates

Early intervention with bleeding control techniques significantly improved chances of survival during emergencies, reducing fatalities.

Broward County Healthcare Coalition Burn Cart Project

The Broward County Healthcare Coalition initiated the Burn Cart Project to improve burn injury response in the face of limited burn bed availability and the absence of a burn center within Broward County. This project aims to provide timely and effective care for burn victims during disasters or mass casualty incidents, such as fires, industrial accidents, or terrorist attacks.

The Burn Cart Project significantly enhances Broward County’s burn injury response. By providing specialized equipment, strategic distribution, and training, the project improves the speed and effectiveness of burn care, saving lives and improving recovery, despite the challenge of limited local burn centers.

Key Elements

Burn Cart Equipment

Specialized burn carts, stocked with burn dressings and supplies were deployed to enable healthcare providers to quickly treat burn victims at the scene or during transport.

Strategic Distribution

Burn carts were strategically placed in all acute care hospitals and on EMS units across the county to ensure rapid access in burn-related emergencies.

Training

The Coalition organized training for healthcare providers and responders to ensure effective use of the burn carts and proper burn care. The Coalition also offered Advanced Burn Life Support courses and has successfully trained over 90 healthcare providers throughout Broward County to improve burn response.

Impact on Burn Response

Enhanced Immediate Care

Burn carts allow healthcare professionals to provide initial burn treatment at the site or during transport, significantly improving patient outcomes.

Improved Community Resilience

The project strengthens the county’s preparedness and response to burn injuries, especially with the limited local burn bed capacity and proximity to the nearest burn center outside Broward County.

Increased Survival Rates

Quick access to specialized burn care reduces complications, infection risks, and promotes faster recovery.

Broward County Healthcare Coalition Cyanokit Project

The Cyanokit Project was launched by the Broward County Healthcare Coalition to address cyanide poisoning, a fast-acting and deadly toxin, during emergencies like industrial accidents, fires, or chemical exposures. The goal was to equip healthcare providers and first responders with the tools and training to treat cyanide toxicity swiftly.

Impact on Cyanide Poisoning Response

Faster Treatment

Quick access to Cyanokit improves survival chances by providing timely treatment for cyanide poisoning.

Enhanced Preparedness

Distribution boosted the county's ability to manage cyanide exposure incidents, improving community readiness.

Reduced Mortality Rates

Timely administration of Cyanokit reduces the risk of death or long-term damage from cyanide poisoning.

Key Elements

Cyanokit Distribution

The Coalition distributed Cyanokit, a proven antidote for cyanide poisoning, to hospitals, EMS units, fire departments, and emergency teams across the county

Strategic Placement

Cyanokit kits were placed at all emergency rooms and on EMS units for quick access during cyanide poisoning emergencies.
